Basic Information You Should Know About Your Host Country

You might think that because you are only an expat, specific information about your host country plays no part in your life and hence is unnecessary. If you are only staying for a very short while, then this might be true. If you will be staying in your host country for a while, basic information everybody knows should also be known to you for a relatively more comfortable stay.

If you are acquainted with the basic facts and information about your host country, you might not feel as alienated as you used to the day you had set foot on the land.

Things to consider researching on your host country:

1. History and Long-standing Traditions

One of the steps you have to take in order to start living your life like a local is to know your host country's history and long-standing traditions. A people rich in culture would be proud of their country's history. If you want to fit in, you would need to be able to relate every nuance and reference to the country's past. Traditions are also very important to know.

You would not want to unknowingly offend anybody. Though you might be forgiven during your first few months of stay, people would expect you to respect and know a modicum about their traditions after a while.

2. General Characteristics of the Demographic

Take it this way - if you want or need to live with another person in peace, you would need to know what makes this person tick. It is the same as living with a whole population. You need to understand their collective mentality and know how they think as a nation.

You do not need to believe what they believe or to conform yourself to be able to fit a certain mould. However, knowing them and how they think could put you at ease and would consequently make them stop seeing you as merely a "foreigner".

3. Political Climate

Would you not want to know political matters in your host country? Even if you are generally disinterested in these topics, knowing about the political climate of your host country could prove to be helpful. This is most especially true if you will be going to a country with suppressed political tension or a country with the tendency to erupt into full-scale war any time of the day.

Even in relatively benign locations however, it would still be ideal to be knowledgeable about the nation's politics. This might prove to be most helpful for businessmen and investors whose holdings rely heavily on the country's economic status.

4. Other matters such as famous tourist spots

Other trivial matters might seem too mundane for you to even take notice. But there might be a particular event and location when you will be able to put them to good use. Sometimes, the little tidbits are the ones that really matter and can bring you closer to the people of your host country.

Knowing the country's famous tourist spots on the other hand, could be useful in case your friends and family from back home came to visit. It would then be your role to play host and show them around your newfound places.

There are many other factors you should consider knowing about your host country. Just like a person you wish or need to befriend, you would need to know everything you can. It is a fact that it might take a while for you to get used to and embrace your host country's "personality". In time, you will learn to be at peace with what your new country has to offer.
