Pets are generally considered to be part of the family by many animal lovers. For someone who treats animals with extreme love and affection, surely, leaving a pet behind is unthinkable. You could, of course, bring your pets with you to another country, granted that you fulfill all requirements. The very first thing to do is to research on what you would need to be able to bring your beloved pets.
Taking Pets When You MoveRequirements generally differ from country to country. However, a common one would be the need to avail of a pet license or a veterinary certificate of good health. A pet would usually require records of vaccination and rabies shots to be able to pass this requirement. You would want to consult the embassy or consul of the country of destination about this matter. Afterwards, your veterinarian would be the one to consult. You could also hire pet relocation specialists to take care of paperwork and actual transportation of animals. This is recommended for optimum insurance of the safety of your animals. Make sure the company you hire is reputable. If possible, solicit advice from those who've experienced the company's services firsthand. You would want to do all you can for the safety of your pets. When you hire pet relocations specialists, your animals would either be flown earlier or later than you. This depends on the company. In the case that your pets would be flown later and you have no one to entrust them to, a boarding kennel would be in need. Contact your veterinarian and ask him for suggestions for which boarding kennel he thinks could care for your pets the most. If you prefer to travel with your pet, that is also possible. Bigger animals are kept in cargo while smaller ones could be flown on board. But keep in mind that this depends on their ability to stay behaved during long travels. Animals could be stressed because of a long journey, so ensure your pet's comfort. Cats would prefer small spaces so a standard pet carrier cage would do. Dogs, however, should be allowed enough room in order to stretch their legs. If your animal shows signs of severe stress, sedatives might be put to use. Another thing you need to know is that some countries would require your pets to be quarantined for an assigned number of days after arrival in the country. This is so the country's authorities on animal health could check on the condition of your pets. Countries which are members of PETS or Pet Travel Scheme allow entrance of a limited list of animals without the need for a quarantine period. To check if your country of destination is a member of PETS, contact the embassy or consulate to ask them specifically about this matter. If your pet, indeed, has to be quarantined, check on the quarantine requirements and make sure everything is in order before your date of departure. Upon arrival and when time allows you, find a reliable veterinarian in your new country and consult on the status and guidelines of keeping a pet in the country. |
