What To Do Upon Arrival

Think carefully before you purchase that airline ticket. Every aspect of your move should be planned and handled accordingly - nothing should be done on a whim.

This is because the smallest of mistakes could ruin the entire move. Even the time of departure and arrival should be carefully thought out to avoid unnecessary hoops in your new life. If possible, and if you deem it necessary, make plans so the date of your arrival would be a weekend or a non-working holiday. This is recommended so that you can have some time to adapt to your new environment. Though a few days are definitely not enough to get used to everything, it will at least give you an idea of how living in your home would be. Use the days you have prior to working for getting to know your environment and if you had never made arrangements for accommodation, find one while still staying at a hotel.

What To Do When You Arrive at Your Move Destination

The very first thing you should do upon arrival, however, is to register at your embassy or consulate. This is highly advised for your safety. Aside from the fact that they will be able to verify your arrival, you will also be able to get their contact details should the need for further contact arise in the future. You consulate would be the first one to help you in case of need especially when it entails legal matters regarding documents and the like.

If you had planned your arrival to be on a non-working day, you could take time to unpack and most especially - sleep. You might find the move more stressful than you could ever imagine. You do not want to start working at a state wherein you cannot even remember your name. In a new country and a new environment where nothing is familiar and maybe even the language is gibberish to your ears, you should always be on your toes or else get lost in the process.  Unless you moved to a new country in order to retire peacefully, you want to be at your best when meeting your new colleagues.

It is always best if you asked for the contact details of your new workplace before you even arrive so you can contact them in case you cannot find your office. If you do get the time, however, find out how to travel to your new workplace beforehand. You should also arrange legal documents as soon as you can. Even if you have an offshore account, opening a local bank account is always recommended for legal reasons. Expats who arrive in the country without having bought a house yet should do so early into their stay especially if they have work in the country.

There are many other things you should do as soon as you land in your new home. Unpacking, for example, could drain all your energy and you might end up sleeping days on end due to fatigue. One advice would be to prioritize. There are things you can do later. For the time being, attend to things which are immediate.
