How great are you at saying goodbye? It is never easy to leave behind something you are very much used to. Imagine not being able to see your next-door neighbor watering his garden at exactly seven in the morning every single day as you collect the morning newspaper. Consider not seeing also that nasty kid from the next block who trampled your garden once, or that old lady down the street who always seemed to have her nose up in the air. Imagine how it would be not being able to see your family and friends on a whim and that you are separated from them by vast oceans. You will miss even the most mundane routine. You will undoubtedly miss your loved ones.
Preparing to leaveIt will be best to say goodbye properly since you will be leaving for good or at least for years at a time. You can include your email address and telephone number when you give out your address in your new house. If you do not know where you will be staying in your new country yet, at least call them up when you arrive and tell them where to reach you. That is if you do not know yet where you will be staying in your new country yet. Before that though, when you say goodbye personally, do not forget to bid farewell even to your casual friends. You will never know when they might come to your aid in the future and if you will see them again. Never burn bridges because you will never know when you would need to cross back. Communicating with friends and loved onesWith regards to communication when you are already in your new country, it would not be a huge problem due to the available technology. High-speed Internet access is available almost anywhere in the globe. As long as you both have Internet connectivity, you could meet online on instant messengers and even chat face-to-face using a web cam together with a microphone. With the abundance of Internet service providers these days, the cost for broadband services has gotten quite low. You can also use conventional telephones since cheap international direct dial services are available anywhere. Phone cards are very common and very affordable, ensuring you constant contact with your loved ones. Mobile phones, of course, would be great help. Check if your current phone could be used in your country of destination. Different countries have different frequencies so you may want to know if your phone is single-band, dual-band, or tri-band. Tri-band works in most countries except a few like Japan that use unique frequencies. When it comes to the time allotted to keep in touch, it is true that you might be busy with your work and trying to adapt, but try to set some regular time to talk to your family or some friends back home. Not because you are in another country, you should cut ties and call only when needed. You might have to wait until you settle down, say for about a month or so, but after the wait, you would be able to communicate frequently. Just like you need to spend quality time with the members of the family who might have had joined you in another country, you also need to spend time with loved ones back home even if it is only through the internet or the telephone. |
